Medicare Enrollment Period Dates for 2026

Missing a Medicare enrollment window can mean penalties or being stuck in the wrong plan for a year. Here are the key dates for 2026.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 – December 7 each year. During AEP, anyone with Medicare can switch Medicare Advantage plans, switch Part D drug plans, or move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Changes take effect January 1.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

When you first become eligible at 65, you get a 7-month window centered on your birthday month. Enrolling during IEP avoids late penalties and coverage gaps.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (OEP)

January 1 – March 31. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to another MA plan or return to Original Medicare once during this period.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

You may qualify for a SEP if you move, lose employer coverage, or have other life changes. A licensed agent can tell you if you qualify and help you enroll.
