Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare (2026)

One of the biggest decisions at 65 is whether to stay on Original Medicare or switch to Medicare Advantage. Both are Medicare — but they work differently.

Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Original Medicare covers hospital (Part A) and doctor visits (Part B). It does not include prescription drugs, dental, vision, or hearing. You can add a separate Part D drug plan and a Medigap supplement — but premiums and out-of-pocket costs add up.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage bundles Parts A and B into one plan, usually includes Part D drug coverage, and often adds dental, vision, hearing, gym access, and transportation. Many plans have $0 monthly premium beyond Part B.

Which is right for you?

It depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and how much you travel. If your preferred doctors are in-network and the plan covers your medications affordably, Medicare Advantage can offer more benefits for less out-of-pocket cost.
